Three million children face the risk of death in the Horn of Africa due to drought
UNICEF reported that "three million children in this arid region and marginalized face the risk of death or illness or the consequences of malnutrition in the long run and they represent a large segment of the 14 million people infected with a serious and growing numbers are cause for concern."
And issued warnings in recent weeks as several humanitarian agencies of the United Nations and non-governmental organizations estimated the number of people threatened by serious food crises in East Africa is estimated at 14 million people.
UNICEF pointed out that drought added to the "worst acts of violence" defined the region for years in Somalia and "some parts of northern Ethiopia", as well as rising food prices, which exceeded 200% during the last eight months in areas suffering the most.
The UNICEF Regional Director for Eastern and Southern Africa Per Angebak that "it is necessary to adopt national policies on energy in this difficult phase and additional international monitoring of funds quickly. The threats to children and their families, serious and time is short to contain them."
He said Angebak "The security (humanitarian workers) presents a major problem" in many regions of the Horn of Africa.
In Somalia the vulnerability of these workers from local and foreigners in the past months of bloody attacks and kidnappings increasingly led to the deaths of six drivers Somalis working for the WFP from the beginning of 2008.
According to the United Nations, about 23 million Somalis representing about 40% of the population will need humanitarian assistance by the end of the year, up 77% since January 2008
